Wednesday, May 27, 2009 : York Street Sustainable Housing Opens

A new, exciting and sustainable social housing scheme was officially opened at York Street, Dublin 2 by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Eibhlin Byrne and the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr. John Gormley, TD.
York Street Housing project was a proposed replacement of a 1940’s remodeling of a Georgian tenements in Dublin’s South inner city. The replacement building was designed to house the existing residents and provide additional social housing units for Dublin City Council.
“I am delighted to welcome this wonderful example of sustainable and energy efficient housing. This reflects strongly Dublin’s commitment to making our city greener which can only improve the quality of life for people as well as ensuring that Dublin’s sustainability is ensured into the future” said the Lord Mayor.
The project entailed the construction of 66 apartments for local authority tenants, a basement car-park, ground floor retail units, a community centre and a secure communal garden for the residents.

The apartments were constructed by precast twin walls with precast wide-slab floors and included an insitu-concrete basement. The external walls consisted of pre-finished precast concrete walls and punch windows and doors. A number of the units were constructed with timber framing with an external natural lime render. The roofs were a Bauder system which includes a green roof.

The new building included a number of environmental features designed to apply best to practice solutions in energy efficiency, and waste and water management. These included generous glazed in balconies with sliding glass panels which trap solar heat, for use as winter gardens in winter- time and as extra living space in the summer; communal high efficiency heating boilers are connected to and fed by the solar thermal panels, rainwater harvesting storage butts and recycling and waste composting facilities.
