Killanin Stand, Galway Racecourse Awarded ‘Highly Commended’ Building by the 2007 Opus Architecture and Construction Awards
The new stand has a similar footprint to that of the original stand and has a similar capacity of 6,000 people. The building is laid out so that the viewing area to the south (racetrack side) is maximised. At ground floor there is a standing terrace with a capacity of 3,000 people and the upper level of the terrace contains a seating area for approximately 650 people.
People can move freely between ground and first floors through the seating / standing areas or via the escalators at the rear of the building. The lower levels of the development has bar, restaurant and toilet facilities. The upper levels, intended for use by the corporate sector, now house panoramic restaurants built to standards that will rival any sporting developments in the world.
