Building Manager of the Year Award 1996

Brown Thomas Store, Grafton Street - €9.5m

This was a nine month project which was completed on time, in one of the most congested areas of Dublin. The Project consisted of demolition over total site area, with retention of the Grafton Street facade, erecting flying and raking shores to adjoining properties, underpinning to adjacent walls, and reconstruction of 5 floors over basement. Site access from Grafton Street at front was extremely limited. The only access available was at the rear of the site in Clarendon Street where the traffic flow could not be impeded. Structural steel frame was erected by night as it was the only time the tower crane was available. 24 hour shift work was required for the last 10 weeks.

The crane was positioned inside proposed lift shaft. A gantry was erected, spanning across Clarendon Street to allow free flow of traffic under. This platform was used for locating site administration and some storage. Site deliveries were co-ordinated with client’s own stock deliveries to his adjoining premises which was continually trading.
