ECSN European Award for Excellence in Concrete 2004 Millennium Wing, National Gallery (RIAI Awards 2002) RIAI Best Public Building 2002 Winner Irish Concrete Awards 2002 Shortlisted for the Stirling Prize 2002
New Millennium Wing, National Gallery - €22.14m
“Light, shade, surface, material and space are conjured to produce a public building of presence, drama and integrity. A triumph of architecture and of the competition system.” The new wing, providing 4,000 sq m of extra space, was unique with a myriad of logistical challenges. The 78 week programme demanded careful planning, detailing and pure craftmsmanship in formwork manufacture and erection and the highest quality standards in the supply and pouring of concrete. Ultimately, careful planning and management, combined with establishing good neighbourly relations and co-operation were the key to building this complex building on such a confined space.
